Sorry, I was being slack with my wording. Further upthread we were discussing use of TIMER_IRQ_3 (which turned out to be already in use by the SDK - evidently both we and the SDK authors had decide that the third one was least likely to be used by others!).What exactly is "TIMER_3" ?

But as you rightly point out there is in fact only one actual timer and it's the timer compare interrupts that there are four of. And in the context of wanting just a monotonic timer, then an interrupt isn't needed so my comment didn't really make sense.
