One reason desktop might not run on the early B is lack of memory. Increasing the amount of swap may get it working, albeit very slowly and at the cost of increased wear on your SD card.
Rebuilding all the possible initramfs files is a large part of that. If you are only going to use the card in the one family of Pi (Pi A/B, A+/B+, Pi Zero), you could remove the unused kernel packages and save a lot of time.I wondered if updating would help, so I did "sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade", and that (including a kernel upgrade and all that "update-initramfs" stuff bookworm requires) took 64 minutes!
