I was also surprised that it worked. I found this alternative by randomly searching on Google. I was thinking about buying a power supply, but for now I'm going to keep it connected to both USBs.The original Pi Zero has no trouble powered from any computer's USB port.I think I solved it, it was power supply. Since I'm using the computer's USB port, I needed to be connected to both ports at the same time to power the board. But I'm still testing and, as soon as I resolve it here, I'll close the post.
In time: the problem was tensorflow, which does not support Raspberry Pi Zero.
The Zero 2 needs significantly more power but can run ARMv7 and 64-bit code.
Somewhere in my ideal world there would be a Zero that combined the best of both: very low power draw with 64-bit Linux.
Since that's not an option, it's an interesting idea to connect both sockets for more power. I'm a little surprised but glad to hear it works.
